Do you need a NetSuite partner?
Everything Oracle’s marketing won’t tell you about NetSuite partners: what they are, how they’re paid, when one is genuinely the right choice, and when it isn’t.
What is a NetSuite partner?
A NetSuite partner is a firm in Oracle’s official channel programme, licensed to sell and implement NetSuite. The two main types are Solution Providers, who resell NetSuite licences and implement the system, and Alliance Partners, who implement while Oracle sells the licence. Both are certified by Oracle, and both earn their living, in part, from the software you buy.
That last part matters more than the certificates. A partner’s economics are tied to the licence: margin on the sale, targets to hit and renewals to protect. None of that makes partners dishonest. But it does mean that when a partner advises you, the advice and the sales interest come from the same source.
NetSuite partner or independent consultancy?
Both models can deliver a good project. The difference is what each is built to do. Want to see the product itself before deciding anything? Start with an independent NetSuite demo.
When a partner is the right choice
You want licences and implementation from one firm, you value Oracle’s certification programmes, or you’re buying NetSuite for the first time and want a single contract covering software and build.
When independent serves you better
You want advice with no licence margin behind it, a second opinion on a partner’s proposal, someone to fix or rescue a partner-built system, or a project where “you don’t need that module” is an answer you can trust.
What partners can’t offer
Independent oversight of their own work. If you want your implementation checked, the checker can’t be the firm that built it, or one paid on the same licence.
What independents can’t offer
NetSuite licences. We don’t sell them, by design. If you need licensing help, we’ll point you to the right route and stay out of the transaction.
How NetSuite partners are paid
Solution Providers buy licences from Oracle and resell them to you with a margin, and most carry annual sales targets to keep their partner status and tier. Implementation fees come on top. Alliance Partners earn implementation fees while Oracle bills the licence directly, with referral arrangements in the background. Again: legitimate, disclosed and how Oracle built the channel.
In practice it’s simple. A partner’s advice on licences and modules affects their own revenue. Ours doesn’t, because we earn nothing from the licence. For some projects, that’s the deciding difference.
Want advice with no licence commission behind it?
Talk to an independent solution architect before you choose a partner. It’s free, it takes 30 minutes and there’s no sales pitch.
How to choose a good NetSuite partner
If a partner is the right fit for you, choose carefully. A good partner can deliver a working system; a poor one can leave you needing a rescue. Get to know the delivery team as well as the sales team, and have the named consultants written into the contract. The people selling the project may not be the people building your system. Ask what support looks like after go-live and who will help if something breaks in month three. Request references from businesses of a similar size, in your industry, that went live more than a year ago. Finally, read the statement of work line by line before signing. Be clear about what’s excluded as well as what’s included.
If you’d rather have that scrutiny sitting on your side of the table throughout the project, that’s the job our NetSuite project assurance service does.
