NetSuite Contractor vs Permanent Hire
Choosing between a contractor and a permanent hire comes down to three things: the real costs, how long you’ll need them and the IR35 rules.
Day rate versus salary is the wrong maths
Comparing a £650 day rate directly to a £70k base salary gives you the wrong numbers every time. An accurate financial calculation loads the permanent salary with pension contributions, employer taxes, benefits, onboarding time and the high cost of a bad hire. On the flip side, contractor day rates include a premium for immediate flexibility, balanced against the reality that their knowledge leaves when the contract ends. Neither option is automatically better. The shape and timeline of the work decide which makes financial sense.
Contract vs permanent in brief
- ContractorsBest for short-term projects and specialised technical builds.
- Permanent hiresBest for administrators and system owners who maintain long-term platform health.
- Contract-to-permBest for testing technical fit before committing to a permanent offer.
- Hybrid teamsA permanent administrator managing daily tasks alongside contract specialists hired for specific projects.
When to hire a NetSuite contractor – and when to hire permanently
Match the hire to the shape of the work. Fixed-scope work with a clear end date usually suits a contractor, while work that continues indefinitely usually justifies a permanent role.
Where a contractor fits
Bring in a NetSuite contractor when you need specific expertise for a defined period. Typical examples include go-live cover during an implementation, a SuiteScript or integration build, a data migration or a backlog of reports and workflows that your team cannot clear alongside their day jobs. An experienced contractor can start quickly and deliver against a clear brief without a long onboarding period. Once the work is finished, the cost stops, so you are not paying a salary for skills you only needed for a few months.
Where a permanent hire fits
Hire permanently when NetSuite needs day-to-day ownership. A permanent administrator or system owner handles user requests, maintains saved searches and roles, tests each release and builds knowledge of your processes over time. That knowledge stays in the business, which makes future changes faster and less risky. A permanent hire also gives you someone to own the NetSuite roadmap and prioritise improvements based on what the business needs next.
Combining both
Many growing businesses use both routes. A permanent administrator runs the system day to day, while contractors deliver larger projects such as new subsidiaries, integrations or module rollouts. Before any contractor starts, agree how they will hand over their work, so that documentation and knowledge stay with your team after the contract ends.

IR35 and off-payroll rules for NetSuite contractors
UK NetSuite contractor engagements must comply with off-payroll working rules (IR35). Key operational requirements include:
- Who determines statusFor medium and large clients, you issue the status determination statement; only small-company engagements leave status with the contractor’s company.
- Inside versus outsideGenuine outside-IR35 engagements need working practices to match the paper. Substitution, control and mutuality assessed on reality.
- Rate consequencesInside-IR35 rates run higher to offset employment taxes. Budget the engagement type before negotiating the number.
- Take proper adviceWe’ll flag the considerations candidly – HMRC’s off-payroll working guidance (updated February 2026) is the primary source – but status determinations and contract wording belong with your legal and tax advisers.
